We're all going on holiday: Tips for maintaining good sleep whilst away

baby sleep

Ah, travel – that magical word that once meant spontaneous adventures and now spells packing a mini-van full of "essentials" (you never knew you needed so many snacks!). Add a toddler into the mix, and you're not just packing bags; you're preparing for a mini expedition. But fear not! As your resident sleep experts, we're here to guide you through maintaining those hard-won sleep routines, even when you're miles from home.

  1. Pack a Piece of Home:

Before you zip up that suitcase, remember that toddlers are creatures of habit. Their pillow, a favourite bedtime book, or that one blanket that's seen better days but works like a charm can be the touch of home that makes all the difference. It's like packing a little bit of sleep magic!

  1. Mimic the Home Environment:

Hotel rooms and grandma's house won't have the familiar sights and sounds of home. Consider a portable white noise machine or an app on your phone to drown out the unfamiliar noises. Dimming the lights an hour before bed can also signal to your little nomad that it's time to wind down, just like at home.

  1. Stick to the Script (Mostly):

While it's tempting to throw routines out the window (you're on holiday, after all!), try to stick to your regular bedtime schedule. Of course, a little flexibility won't hurt, but keeping a semblance of normalcy tells your toddler's internal clock that it's bedtime, not party time.

  1. Plan for Time Zone Changes:

If you're crossing time zones, it's like entering a parallel universe where your toddler's sleep schedule is suddenly upside down. Gradually adjust their sleep schedule a few days before departure or upon arrival. Once you have arrived to your destination immediately follow your normal times but in the new time-zone. Children actually adapt much quicker than us adults but consistency is the key!

  1. Keep Daytime Active and Engaging:

Tire them out — in the best way possible! Engage in activities that stimulate their minds and burn off that endless energy. More fun by day means better sleep by night.

  1. Expect a Little Turbulence:

Just like a bumpy flight, expect some disruptions to the sleep routine. It's okay. Take a deep breath. You're not alone. Stay calm, stay consistent, and remember, this too shall pass.

  1. Celebrate the Wins:

Every night they snooze in a new place is a victory. Celebrate these small wins with your little adventurer. It's all part of the journey.

Remember, while maintaining sleep routines on the go might seem like a challenge fit for a superhero (cape not included), it's all about preparation, a sprinkle of patience, and a good dose of humour. Happy travels! With these tips and a spirit of adventure, you're ready to tackle travel and sleep, making sure the whole family comes back with restful memories and stories to tell!
