“Same Sleep Struggles, Different Place"

One of the biggest myths about family holidays is that a change of scenery automatically equals a rest.

Sometimes it does.

But often, especially with babies and toddlers, holidays simply move the same challenges into a less familiar environment.

At home, you know the room. You know the cot. You know where everything is. You know how dark the bedroom gets. You know what time dinner happens. You know the little rituals that help your child settle.

On holiday, all of that can change.

The bedroom may be too bright.

The travel cot may feel unfamiliar.

The room may be too hot.

There may be noise from restaurants, family members, neighbours or siblings.

Your baby may be passed around all day.

Your toddler may be running on sunshine, snacks and excitement.

And you may be trying to smile while quietly thinking, “This is harder than real life.”

If that is you this summer, please know this: you are not ungrateful. You are not negative. You are not failing to enjoy your holiday properly.

You are tired.

And tired parents need support, not guilt.

What Can You Do?

1. Keep a Few Sleep Anchors

You do not need to recreate your home routine perfectly on holiday.

Instead, keep a few familiar anchors:

  • a similar wake-up time most mornings
  • a familiar bedtime routine
  • the same sleep bag or sheet
  • white noise if you use it
  • a comforter if age appropriate
  • regular meals or milk feeds where possible
  • one protected nap if your child still naps

Think of it as a holiday version of the routine: flexible, but still recognisable.

2. Protect Sleep After Big Summer Days

Swimming, beach days, sea air, travel, heat and social stimulation can be exhausting for little bodies.

Sometimes babies and toddlers seem absolutely fine until suddenly they are not fine at all.

If you have had a big pool or beach day, consider an earlier night, a quieter afternoon, or a rescue nap if needed.

Rest after excitement is not “spoiling the fun”.

It is what allows the fun to continue.

3. Be Careful With the “It’s Only One Night” Trap

One late night is usually fine.

Two may be manageable.

But several late nights, short naps and early starts in a row can quickly build sleep debt.

This is when you may see more meltdowns, more night waking, more early rising, more clinginess and more bedtime resistance.

If sleep has slipped for a few days, do not panic. Just gently bring one or two things back: a slightly earlier bedtime, a better nap, or a calmer evening.

Small resets can make a big difference.

4. Manage Family Opinions Kindly but Clearly

Summer holidays often mean more time with grandparents, in-laws, friends and extended family.

This can be wonderful.

It can also be difficult when everyone has an opinion about your baby’s sleep.

“You’re too strict.”

“Just let them stay up.”

“They don’t look tired.”

“They’ll sleep when they’re tired.”

“You never had a routine and you were fine.”

Try to remember: you do not need everyone to agree with your sleep choices.

You just need to protect what your child and your family need.

A simple phrase can help:

“We’re keeping some routine because everyone enjoys the holiday more when she sleeps.”

Or:

“We’re being flexible, but we know what happens when he gets overtired.”

You can be warm and boundaried at the same time.

5. Use the Holiday as a Sleep Reset

For some families, the summer holidays are not the right time to work on sleep.

That is okay.

But for others, it can actually be the perfect opportunity.

You may have more time.

You may not have work the next morning.

You may have another adult around.

You may finally have the headspace to make a plan and stay consistent.

It might not sound like the most exciting way to spend a few days off, but helping your baby sleep better can be one of the best investments you make all summer.

Because when nights improve, days change too.

Parents feel calmer.

Relationships feel less stretched.

Babies cope better.

Toddlers are less overwhelmed.

And the holiday can finally start to feel like a holiday.
